Multidisciplinary Optimization of Drag Power Kites

Abstract

A solution, applications, and the benefits for multidisciplinary optimizations of drag power kites are presented. To allow for fast optimizations and parameter studies, but simultaneously obtain reasonable results by considering all important domains and dominant effects, a multidisciplinary steady systems engineering model is derived. The submodels are coupled by arranging their equations into an explicit sequence. The model is validated by several means. Several optimizations are conducted. Results include that a 40 m wingspan biplane is expected to achieve about 4 MW nominal electrical power. Sensitivities for almost every model parameter are computed, highlighting which parameters or components require a high level of attention.
