Airborne wind energy in the coalition agreement of the new German government

In their recently presented coalition agreement, the conservative CDU/CSU alliance and the Social Democrats (SPD) have declared explicit support for airborne wind energy.

The document, which can be accessed here, outlines the planned policies for the legislative term until early 2029. The agreement cleared one of the last major hurdles to forming Germany’s next government, paving the way for CDU head Friedrich Merz to be sworn in as Germany’s next chancellor in early May. Airborne wind energy is mentioned in the energy policy chapter:

We are also strengthening innovative technologies such as wastewater heat, heat recovery and airborne wind energy.

Coalition agreement

Very much welcomed is also the innovation offensive with the establishment of the “Germany Fund” (Deutschlandfonds), which is intended to close financing gaps in the area of growth and innovation capital, particularly for SMEs and scale-ups. This is an important signal for the airborne wind energy sector, which is ready to make an important contribution to strengthening energy security and value creation in Germany.

Following the establishment of a German feed-in tariff for onshore airborne wind energy in April 2024, both developments are important next steps towards facilitating the integration of the emerging technology into the future energy system.
